Lesson 4: How Do You See Yourself?

Fearfully and Wonderfully Made

Have you ever considered what the Lord thinks of your body? Does your personal view of your body line up with the Word of God?

The following is an excerpt from a post to hisimage e-mail list:

"I have a terrible self-image going way back to when I was young. I was a skinny child, but never liked how I looked. I always compared myself to models in Seventeen magazine and other media sources. I didn't know better. No one ever told me different. So I have some attitudes about what a woman should look like that are very unrealistic and are not of the Lord.

Read the following verses, recording them in your journal. Ask the Lord to reveal how HE sees YOU.

"And God saw everything that He had made, and behold, it was very good." Genesis 1:31

"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place.
When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body.
All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be."
- Psalm 139-13-16

If you have allowed yourself to despise what the Lord created (you), ask Him to forgive you right now. Read the above scriptures each day until they are in your heart; renew your mind. Make this your confession:

"How precious to me are your thoughts, O God!" - Psalm 139:17

Have comments from others affected how you see yourself? A parent's criticism, a brother or sister's hurtful comment, an old boyfriend's joking or even your husband... Identify these statements, determine and verbally state today that they no longer have any hold over your life, and forgive each of these people for what they confessed over you.
