Lesson 3: What are Your Motives?

Search Your Heart

Both Free to Be Thin (chapters 3 and 4) and Weigh Down challenge you to examine your motives for desiring a lifestyle change. This is very important as it will determine in the end whether you succeed or not.

Look at your My Personal Plan Worksheet where you listed why you want to get to your target weight. Do any of these include crucifying the flesh, bringing your flesh under the subjection of the Holy Spirit or pleasing the Lord?

"Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life." - Galatians 6:7-8

"So we make it our goal to please Him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it." - 2 Corinthians 5:9

"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit..." - Philippians 2:3a

Ask the Lord to give you pure motives in changing your lifestyle:

  • Learn to be led by the Spirit in the area of eating and nutrition;
  • Draw nearer to the Lord -- receive comfort from Him instead of food;
  • Please the Lord with my eating habits;
  • Be free from the bondage of self-destructive eating habits;
  • Becoming stronger in the Lord through daily time in the Word;
  • A new, healthier me!
