Goals: Setting and Achieving Them

Before completing this section, I suggest you read the program pages beginning with Getting Started followed by Lesson 1: What are Your Motives. Next you will be ready to make your own Personal Plan. As you fill out the My Personal Plan Worksheet you will be establishing your ultimate aim. The following worksheets will help you break down your major goals into easily achievable smaller goals.

Setting Quarterly Goals

You have embarked on a journey. On this journey you need to see landmarks to confirm you are going in the right direction. The quarterly goals are those landmarks. Let's say I want to lose 70 pounds. I estimate that is will take me a little over 17 months to achieve this loss if I average 1 pound per week. 17 months is a long time, so I will break this overall goal down into smaller doable goals, being sure to include lifestyle changes:

Sample quarterly goals:

  • lose 12 pounds
  • drink plenty of water
  • exercise 4 times/week
  • eat only when hungry
  • read the Word each day
  • rest in the peace of God -- no comforting with food

Setting Monthly Goals

Next, we break the quarterly goals down into monthly goals (you can skip this step and go straight to weekly goals if you like, but I like this step):

Sample monthly goals:

  • Lose 4 pounds
  • drink lots of water to cleanse my body
  • exercise 3 times each week at least 15 minutes
  • Learn to discern true stomach hunger
  • read the Word each day
  • run to God when I get upset

Setting Weekly/Daily Goals

Finally, we get down to the nitty gritty: how to achieve those quarterly/monthly goals. Each week should show progression toward those goals. At the end of each week, you will complete a Weekly Evaluation to determine how you did.

Sample weekly goals:

  • Drink 32 ounces of water each day: drink a big glass with each meal and one each time I think about food
  • I will walk on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday for 15 minutes
  • I will drink a glass of water each time I think I am hungry and wait 5 minutes, then eat something nutritious if I am still hungry
  • After breakfast each day, I will read my daily verse and meditate on it all day
  • I will pull out my daily verse when I am upset -- run to the Lord
