Recommended Reading List - Beginning Readers
Beginning readers work very hard to decode words. Reading is not always pleasant at this stage of reading education. Parents can make summer reading for beginning readers a lot of fun by participating in the reading process.
Reading with your Beginning Reader
The following steps are highly recommended for reading with your beginning reader:
- First and foremost: Do not recreate school at home with your child. Keep it fun and enjoyable!
- Read the entire book aloud to your child first.
- Take the time to find new and difficult words (most early readers have a list of new words provided), practice them together and discuss their meanings.
- Keep reading time limited to 20 minutes.
- Take turns reading from the book. You read a paragraph, then your child reads the next paragraph, and so on.
- While reading aloud, don't forget to show excitement, animation, energy and passion.
- If your child enjoys drawing or crafts, encourage your child to draw a picture of what the story is about.
- Discuss the story with your child. Ask questions, encourage critical thinking, and let your child ask you questions about the story.
- Have fun!!!
Phonics and Reading Instruction
The following books are to be used for teaching phonics, and for practicing phonics and reading skills throughout the summer. Take your pick. I have personally used Alpha-Phonics, Phonics Pathways and The Writing Road to Reading. The first two are really fun and simple. The latter is rigorous. Might not work for quick review.

Early Readers
I have to recommend Bob Books for the most beginning readers. They are cute, simple and underwhelming, especially for ADHD or LD children. The Early Readers from Alpha Omega Publications are great Bible story readers that begin with short vowel, one-syllable words and increase in difficulty. I have used both of these resources for 4 of my children.
My youngest son fell in love with Biscuit stories. We now have the full collection of Biscuit early readers, a beanie that looks like Biscuit and and Biscuit eraser. Encourage children to fall in love with a character. This promotes passion for reading and stories.
